چکیده

Gas mixtures have been studied in order to be used in the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) of the OPERA spectrometers. We are interested in mixtures with a low R-134a concentration in order to reduce the streamer charge and the operating voltage without spoiling the usual RPC performances. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. Test of freonless operation of resistive plate chambers with glass electrodes F 1 mm gas gap vs 2 mm gas gap

Non-freon gas mixtures (Ar/iso-C4H10) were tested as the chamber gas for 1 and 2 mm gas gap Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with float glass as the resistive electrodes, operated in the streamer mode. With the narrower (1 mm) gas gap, streamer charge is reduced (B1=3), which reduces the dead time (and dead area), associated with each streamer, improving the detection efficiency. The best perfor...

Aging tests and chemical analysis of Resistive Plate Chambers for the trigger of the ALICE dimuon arm

Resistive Plate Chambers operated in streamer mode have been chosen as trigger detectors for the forward dimuon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment. During tests performed at CERN PS, small size prototypes with low-resistivity bakelite electrodes and with a strongly quenched gas mixture have shown the required rate capability, tracking and timing properties. Present efforts are devoted to the ...

Study of the Resistive Plate Chambers for the ALICE Dimuon Arm

The trigger system for the ALICE Dimuon Arm will be based on Resistive Plate Chambers. A RPC prototype, with electrodes made of low resistivity bakelite (ρ ∼ 3·109Ωcm) has been tested both at the SPS and at the GIF. The results for operation in streamer mode are presented here.

Study of HF Production in BaBar Resistive Plate Chambers

The BaBar detector has operated over 200 2nd generation Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) in the forward endcap since 2002. Many chambers have increased noise rates and high voltage currents. These aging symptoms are correlated with the integrated RPC current as expected, but also depend on the rate and direction of the gas flow, indicating that pollutants produced in the gas can accelerate aging...

SF6 quenched gas mixtures for streamer mode operation of RPCs at very low voltages

In the present paper we describe a search for gases that allow to reduce the energy of the electrical discharge produced in Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode, by reducing both the operating voltage and the released charge. This can be achieved, with current gas mixtures of argon, tetrafluoroethane (TFE) and isobutane, by reducing the total amount of quenching components ...
